The project aims at the dvelopment of a smart knee replacement. Due to trauma and especially in cases of bone cancer like osteosarcoma, bone replacement is needed. In the cases of knee prostheses, it would be useful to count with supporting measuring systems capable of letting the healthcare professionals analyze the state of the prostheses and the surrounding tissues, monitoring both recovery after intervention and potential long-term issues: progressive failure, problems due to trauma, eventual tumour growth.
To this end, an instrumented knee implant, capable of continuously or periodically evaluating the implant and patient's state would be advisable. Ideally, wireless communication for extracting the information from the prosthesis and patient would be applicable.
