Parkinson's Disease (PD) is the world's fastest growing neurological sickness. It is a movement disorder of the nervous system that worsens over time. Currently affecting over 10 million people worldwide and increasing at the rate of 150,000 per year, it is no longer the sickness of old men - it can afflict men and women from 15-75 years. People like me, affected at 50 years of age.
Despite billions of dollars being spent in R&D, neither solutions nor cure is yet on the horizon. Heck, we don't even know for sure what causes it, where it originates, what trajectory it will take, what speed, what life expectancy and what symptoms will show up in time. Theories abound, experiments galore, but conclusive answers don't.
One of the most common early symptoms is a cyclical tremor at 4-6Hz. Usually treated with dopamine, pramipexol, propranolol or artane, but more than 70% patients are not helped by these drugs, and eventually their symptoms can even get worse as a result of long term side effects of these drugs.
As a diehard technologist, I believe that we engineers would be able to devise something. I have an idea to develop a sleeve, as a low-cost nonmedical wellness device that can counteract the tremors, thereby stabilizing the tremoring arm or leg, and providing relief to a parkinson's sufferer. I wish to implement this - as a Creative Commons solution, to help myself and others - before my own PD gets worse, eventually robbing me of my cognitive abilities.
I am very good at problem analysis, understanding and alternative development. I am very good at building things myself. I have a project plan and I have a ready investor - Me!! I even have a ready guinea pig - Me!! But unfortunately i lack a background in electronics. I am looking for persons who would be interested in networking and collaborating to develop a device like this.
